Great American Smokeout

GASO Banner 2016Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout event. Encourage someone you know to use the date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. By quitting – even for 1 day – smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk.

About 40 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the world. While cigarette smoking rates have dropped (from 42% in 1965 to 17% in 2014), cigar, pipe, and hookah – other dangerous and addictive ways to smoke tobacco – are very much on the rise. Smoking kills people – there’s no “safe” way to smoke tobacco.

Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits at any age. Quitting is hard, but you can increase your chances of success with help. Getting help through counseling or medications can double or triple the chances of quitting successfully.

Who Drinks Coffee?

Can Coffee Lower Cancer Risk?

coffee

Most Americans drink at least 1 cup of coffee a day, and many feel like they can’t face the morning without it. So wouldn’t it be great if our beloved beverage helped protect us from cancer? There is, in fact, some reason to believe it could. Coffee is brewed from beans that contain antioxidants, which are thought to have a protective effect against cancer.

Lessons From the Olympics Help Shannon Miller Through Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Seven-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller says lessons she learned while training for gymnastics competitions helped her endure the rigors of treatment for ovarian cancer. “A huge part of my success as an athlete was that I had the mental game. To get through the toughest moments of treatment I relied on goal setting and keeping that positive mentality,” said Miller.

Miller was 33 when she found out she had ovarian cancer. It was fall 2010 and she had almost skipped her regular women’s health exam. She was a new mother to 1-year-old Rocco, had recently launched her company, Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women, and just felt too busy with life and work to go for a checkup. But just as she was calling to cancel the appointment, she had a change of heart.

Mission Monday ~ How Healthy Is Your Salad?

close up of healthy salad on plate

Salad is a healthy choice for lunch or dinner, isn’t it? That depends on what’s in it, or perhaps more importantly, what’s on it.

Dressing, cheese, and bacon add calories and fat that can sabotage your healthy eating plans. Follow these tips to keep your salads healthy without sacrificing flavor.

  • Choose a variety of fresh, colorful vegetables at their peak flavor, like dark green kale, red bell peppers, orange carrots, and red onions.
  • Skip fatty toppings like cheese, bacon, nuts, and seeds. If you must indulge, use only a little.
  • Use less salad dressing. In restaurants, ask for the dressing on the side. Try adding it with a fork instead of a spoon.
  • Experiment with parsley, garlic, oregano, basil, chives, rosemary, thyme, and other herbs; sprinkle them on your salad or add them to a simple vinaigrette made with olive oil.
  • At the salad bar, pass up high-calorie add-ons like coleslaw, potato salad, and creamy fruit salad.
  • Add variety to your salad with high-fiber, lower calorie items like beans, raw vegetables, and fresh and dried fruit.
