Relay Weekend is Here!
Join thousands of Second Life Residents from all across the real globe as they rally today and Sunday for the 10th Relay Weekend of Relay For Life of Second Life.
“It’s incredible to see how this Relay has grown over the last 10 years,” said Stingray Raymaker, American Cancer Society staff partner. “That first year, 2005, there were 315 Avatars walking the track to bring attention to the importance of cancer research. This year more than 3,000 will take to the track. Come on out and see what has become the largest fundraiser in SL and other virtual worlds.”
Relay Weekend kicked off at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19 and will feature 24 hours of themed laps, activities and entertainment. The weekend will wrap up with a massive party at 1 p.m. PDT Sunday, July 20.
If you can’t be at the Relay sims, tune in to T1 Radio, at T1radio.com, which will be airing the festivities through Relay Weekend. In addition Aview TV will host a 24-hour telethon during Relay Weekend. The broadcast can be seen at http://www.livestream.com/virtualrfl. A new feature this year will also see Krypton Radio, the Gorean Whip, Best of SL Magazine and SL Live Radio joining as media partners for Relay Weekend.
“We have had an amazing season,” said 2014 RFL of SL Chair Nikki Mathieson. “Our volunteers and supporters have worked hard for four months, proudly carrying our Relay mission forward in the continuation of an astounding journey! I am so excited to open Relay weekend with a fun ceremony and the always inspiring Survivor Caregiver Honor Lap. That celebratory lap kicks off a full 24 hours of Second Life residents Celebrating, Remembering, and Fighting Back. Relay For Life of Second Life has made such an important impact, in Second Life, in 1st Life, across the globe! We are proof that a determined group of people, can join together and do amazing things. We ARE making a difference! Congratulations to each and every person who was involved in this year’s relay and a heartfelt THANK YOU!”

HAVE YOU REGISTERED FOR A RELAY WEEKEND CAMPSITE YET?
If you haven’t registered for a campsite, now is the time because Relay weekend is just around the corner! Relay For Life of Second Life will be held this year on the weekend of July 19th and 20th, 2014. Opening ceremony will take place on the 19th at 10 am SLT. After fundraising for four months this is the time when we all come together as ONE TEAM in our fight against cancer. On that weekend, approximately forty sims will make up our Relay track, themed builds will span the sims constructed by SL Designers who generously share their skill and talent with Relay, Mega Event representatives, our Media Partners and participating teams who will all have a plot of land to build their own campsite.
These are not traditional campsites with a campfire and a tent or RV but spaces with a generous prim allowance where creators may decide to build around this year’s theme, A JOURNEY OF PROMISE. Fundraising events are not to be held at these campsites due to sims becoming overloaded and people not being able to walk the track, but selling items at the campsites, from RFL vendors is encouraged. Since the track spans 40 sims, each lap may take a good hour or two.
A moving tribute to survivorship, cancer survivors from Second Life start-off the Relay by walking a victory lap around the track known as the Survivors’ Lap. Also a Luminaria Ceremony to honor those affected by cancer is held at dusk. Luminaria bags are present along the sides of the entire track and Relayers will have the opportunity to light the Luminaria.
Throughout the evening and into the next day, everyone enjoys entertainment, fun, and camaraderie. Long before walkers have completed their last lap, new friends have been made, old friends have been hugged, and all hearts have been touched by the magic event that is the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
Each community’s Relay For Life is special and our Second Life Relay For Life is no different, but it’s greater power lies in the synergy created from all the Relays taking place nationwide.
The common theme of every Relay, dating back to Dr. Klatt’s first efforts, is to have members of teams continuously walking, running or rolling around a track for 24 hours, to honor those who are surviving cancer, those who have died from it, and the efforts of all who fight it. Cancer never sleeps, and the fight against cancer never rests!
In our Second Life Relay we also bring themes to the track. It’s always fun to see what everyone comes up with to fit into the hour’s theme, as they walk around the track. Besides the track walking and the ceremonies, there will also be various activities taking place all weekend on the Relay Activity regions. Relay weekend is always covered by a lot of SL Media including the Video Telethon and audio coverage by T1 Radio Relay broadcasters. Also joining our broadcast this year will be our 2014 Relay Media Partners, BOSL / SL Live Radio, Krypton Radio and Gorean Whip Radio.
Team registration is open NOW and there are still camps available. There’s no better way to end our Relay season than by taking part in the largest event in Second Life, Relay Event Day. Make plans to attend it.. to participate in it.. there’s just nothing like it!
FASHION FOR LIFE HITS THE GRID!
Fashion For Life is an event supporting Second Life’s Relay For Life campaign to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. It will run from June 7th through June 20th from midnight to midnight. All Fashion For Life events will happen during that time period. In addition to 10 sims of fashions, there will be runways shows and a lookbook organized and sponsored by Best of SL under the direction of Reign Congrejo. There will also be live music and DJs organized and sponsored by Zenzibar’s Zzoie Zee. While Relay For Life has several mega-events, there is only one called Fashion For Life. Any other event calling itself by that name is not affiliated with Relay For Life and not an official Relay For Life event. Men, women and children clothing designers, skin, tattoo and hair designers, jewelry and accessory designers and pose/hud/stand designers are all encouraged to participate. This is an event celebrating Second Life® fashion and the many businesses that make us fabulous. The Fashion For Life logo and banners were graciously designed by Tobias Corvair.

New Mega Event Fundraising Vendors
According to our most recent Cancer Statistics report, we are making progress against cancer in the US, with a 20 percent decline in cancer mortality in two decades. But worldwide, the statistics tell a very different story. In 2010, cancer killed nearly 8 million people – that’s more than the number of global deaths from malaria and HIV/AIDS combined. And it’s expected to grow to more than 13 million by 2030.
This is clearly an immense problem – more than any one organization can tackle alone. It is more important than ever that we realize our vision to be a co-equal partner with all sectors – public, private, and nonprofit – to bring cancer under control. We need both the resources and the awareness that collaborative work can bring to our fight.
We truly are “better together” when we combine the unique strengths of multiple organizations to make a greater impact. (We devoted an entire session to this issue at our recent leadership summit.) We are moving beyond the transactional relationships we’ve had with partners in the past and today are looking for relationships that bring value to all parties. We want to work with merchants who have a mind for our business and a heart for our mission.
One such example is our decision to change the fundraising guidelines for our Mega Events, as a trial run for the 2014 season. This year, we will pilot a new idea that will lead to new opportunities in the future. Instead of requiring merchants at Mega Events to place 2 items in a Relay For Life vendor, we will provide a unique vendor option that merchants will use for all of their items being sold at the event. These new vendors will allow the merchant to designate a percentage for each item’s sale to go to the American Cancer Society, with a requirement that if this option is chosen ALL vendors in the shop will need to be the new vendors.
We received feedback from shoppers at the Mega Events that they would feel better about the event if everything they purchased would send money to the American Cancer Society (instead of having to purchase something that they really didn’t want).
We recognize this as a positive evolution of our fundraising policy that may open partnership opportunities with Second Life companies in the future. This new venture will be available to Mega/Partnership Events for the 2014 season. Teams will not be able to participate in this new shared vendor evaluation period.
